Fire beat Everton in friendly match

July 30, 2008

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- Chris Rolfe and Tomasz Frankowski each scored goals to lead the Fire to a 2-0 win over Everton in an international friendly Wednesday night.

The win against the English Premier League team came on the same day the Fire announced it acquired former Fulham striker Brian McBride from Toronto FC for Chad Barrett, a first-round pick in the 2009 draft, and future considerations.

Gonzalo Segares crossed the ball into the box in the 43rd minute. Rolfe shot it into the upper left corner past an outstretched Tim Howard for a 1-0 lead.

Everton almost tied it in the 66th minute when Yakubu sent a shot that goalkeeper Nick Noble was able to get a few fingers on and block.

Four minutes later, Howard blocked Peter Lowry's shot, then Frankowski tapped in the rebound for a 2-0 advantage.

Everton's Joleon Lescott attempted a shot in the 89th minute. Noble again grabbed it just in time.

Everton's James Vaughan got a red card in the 90th minute for a rough tackle on Daniel Woolard.

Chicago is 6-4-3 in international friendlies. Everton will continue its American tour by next playing the Colorado Rapids.
