CHICAGO -- Landon Donovan was among 22 players picked Tuesday for the U.S. soccer team's exhibition game at England next week and could become the fourth-youngest player in men's soccer to make his 100th international appearance.
Donovan, who leads the U.S. with 35 career goals, will be 26 years, 2 months, 24 days when the Americans play at Wembley on May 28.
According to the U.S. Soccer Federation, the only younger players to make 100 appearances were South Korea's Cha Bum-Kun, who was 24 when he reached 100 in 1977, and Saudi Arabia's Sami Al-Jaber and Mohammed Al-Deayea, who were each 25 in 1998.
Eight of the 22 players picked for the roster against England are with English clubs.
Eleven players were trimmed from the 33-man preliminary roster announced last week for upcoming exhibition games: goalkeepers Troy Perkins and Chris Seitz; defender Frankie Hejduk; midfielders Maurice Edu, Eddie Gaven, Sacha Kljestan and Pablo Mastroeni; and forwards Jozy Altidore, Brian Ching, Kenny Cooper and Robbie Rogers. All but Perkins are with Major League Soccer teams.
After meeting England, the United States plays at Spain on June 4, then faces Argentina at East Rutherford, N.J., on June 8. The Americans open World Cup qualifying on June 15 against Barbados at Carson, Calif., then play at the Caribbean nation June 22.
