Rangers expect Cuellar to be fit for Lisbon

Carlos Cuellar is expected to be fit for Rangers' UEFA Cup tie against Sporting Lisbon, according to the club's official website.

The defender, 26, was rated doubtful for the quarter-final second leg, which takes place at the Jose Alvelade Stadium on Thursday night, after being struck down with a virus.

Cuellar took part in Sunday's 3-3 draw with Dundee United but failed to attend Monday's press conference revealing the nominees for the Players' Player of the Year after making the shortlist.

Manager Walter Smith admitted the Spaniard was doubtful for the crucial clash, which hangs in the balance following a goalless draw at Ibrox.

However, reports from the Rangers camp this morning are more positive, with Cuellar expected to fly out with the rest of the squad tomorrow ahead of the match.

A statement said: 'The Murray Park medical team are confident that Cuellar will take his usual place in the side on Thursday night and he will travel with the team tomorrow morning.'
