Jewell upbeat despite record-breaking defeat

April 7, 2008

Derby manager Paul Jewell lauded a much-improved performance from his side at Everton despite setting a Premier League record for most games without a win.

The 1-0 defeat - courtesy of a Leon Osman goal - made it 27 games without a league win for the Rams, beating Sunderland's run of 2005/06, but the Rams were always in the game and put in a decent performance.

And Jewell said: 'That was better, in fact it was not just a little better but miles better than when I first arrived.

'I felt we deserved a point, we passed the ball really well and we lacked that bit of quality in the box. Maybe a bit of believe, and care at times. But the work we put in was good throughout.

'We took the game to Everton, we tried to attack and move the ball. And Everton started hitting it long, which suited us. We kept the crowd quiet and just needed that little bit extra.

'We could have even won it, but it wasn't to be. But the lads were terrific.'
