Young Lions to face Poland in friendly

February 8, 2008

England Under-21s will play a friendly against Poland at Molineux on March 25.

Stuart Pearce's youngsters virtually assured themselves of a play-off to reach the European Championships when they defeated the Republic of Ireland this week, but their last qualifier is not until September.

Pearce wants to use the Poland friendly at Wolves' ground to increase competition in his squad after seeing the likes of Gabriel Agbonlahor recently promoted to the seniors.

'We believe the result against Ireland will mean we have enough points to qualify for the play-offs but we won't be taking our foot off the pedal now,' he said.

'We have up to 30 players now all pushing for a place in this team and everyone is fighting for a place.

'With players like Gabby Agbonlahor being called up to the senior squad, the players know that they can make that step up if they do well for the under-21s.'

The under-21s will also travel to Wrexham in May to face Wales in a friendly, with the two-legged play-offs held in October.
