February 4, 2008

HOUSTON -- The United States will play its first home qualifier for the 2010 World Cup at Carson, Calif., on June 15 against Barbados or Dominica.

The second-leg of the home-and-home, total-goals series will be played the following weekend in the Caribbean. The winner advances to a semifinal group likely to include Cuba, Guatemala, and Trinidad and Tobago.

In the first round of the North and Central American and Caribbean region, Dominica hosts Barbados on Wednesday, then plays at Bridgetown on March 26. The United States, seeking its sixth straight World Cup appearance, has a first-round bye.

The United States defeated Sweden 2-0 on Jan. 19 in its 2008 opener and plays Mexico on Wednesday night at Houston. The Americans likely will play at Poland on March 26 and at Spain on June 4.
