Former Boca Juniors manager Carlos Bianchi has stated that the current side are favourites for this year's Copa Libertadores while speaking at an awards ceremony in Brazil.
Bianchi believes that Boca - now managed by his former assistant Carlos Ischia - will be the strong favourites to win the 2008 Copa Libertadores.
'Boca are the best team in South America. They have a new manager in Carlos Ischia and are the main candidate to win the Copa,' he told the gathered audience.
'São Paulo will be their main rival and perhaps some Mexican team could also complicate things.'
With Juan Román Riquelme returning to Boca in order to help them defend the crown they gained with him last year, Bianchi feels that his presence will be very important to the team's success.
'Boca gain confidence with Riquleme there; he is very important for the team. He is a player who recently did not succeed at Villarreal in Spain, but is necessary to remember that at his best he took that team to a semi-final in the Champions League.'
Bianchi recently turned down the opportunity to return as manager of Boca and also rejected an approach from River Plate for his services. He seems to be content away from football.
'Today I have no need to manage, I am very well.'
Finally, Bianchi was asked if he felt that Kaká is currently the best player in the world, to which he responded:
'He is truly the best in the world, but tomorrow the best one could be Lionel Messi, who this playing well at Barcelona,' he concluded.
