ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, Dec 16 (Reuters) - Utrecht and Groningen registered home wins over Heracles Almelo and Willem II Tilburg in the Dutch league on Sunday to stay in touch with the top three who did not play due to a police strike.
The matches between league leaders Ajax Amsterdam and PSV Eindhoven and third-placed Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar were postponed due to fears about public safety.
Utrecht won 3-1 to move up to eighth in the table on 24 points, five behind Feyenoord.
Gregoor van Dijk curled a free kick round the wall on the stroke of halftime to open the scoring for Utrecht and doubled the lead 20 minutes before time when he converted a penalty.
Leroy George settled the match with five minutes remaining before Eddy Bosnar scored a consolation goal for the visitors.
Uruguayan Bruno Silva earned Groningen a 1-0 win with a free kick eight minutes into the second half to put the side on 24 points in ninth.
Ajax are top with 31 points, one more than PSV and two above Feyenoord, who are now level on 29 points with Heerenveen, 5-1 winners over NAC Breda on Saturday.
A Santi Kolk double and a penalty from Harrie Gommans inspired Vitesse Arnhem to a 3-0 home win over bottom side Excelsior Rotterdam.
