Ghana, Spain reach semifinals of U-17 World Cup

CHANGWON, South Korea -- Two-time champion Ghana defeated Peru 2-0 Saturday to reach the semifinals of the Under-17 World Cup.

Ghana will next face Spain, which beat France in a penalty-kick shootout after the quarterfinal was tied 1-1. Spain is trying to win its first U-17 World Cup. In Sunday's quarterfinals, Argentina will meet Nigeria while England will play Germany.

For Ghana, Sadick Adams scored during added time of the first half and Ransford Osei padded the lead in the 53rd minute.

In the other quarterfinal, France opened the scoring in the 52nd minute on a goal by Damien Le Tallec, and Jordi replied for Spain in the 72nd. Goalkeeper David De Gea blocked Thibault Bourgeois' third penalty kick for France in a shootout won 5-4 by Spain.

"He has the potential to be one of the best goalkeepers in Spain, if not the world, providing he keeps developing," Spain coach Juan Santiesteban said.
