MADRID, June 26 (Reuters) - Racing Santander have appointed former Recreativo Huelva coach Marcelino to take charge of the Primera Liga club for next season.
The 41-year-old is due to be presented on Wednesday, the Cantabrian club said in a statement on their Web site.
He replaces Miguel Angel Portugal who quit having steered Racing to 10th in the Primera Liga.
Marcelino, who had been close to a deal with Real Betis, left Recreativo at the end of last season after two successful years with the modest Andalucian outfit.
He led Recre to promotion in his first year and against most predictions steered them to the verge of the UEFA Cup places with an eye-catching brand of attacking football.
They finished the campaign in eighth place. The club had made it to the top flight twice before and both times returned the following year.
