WASHINGTON -- D.C. United signed Troy Perkins to a four-year contract extension Thursday, rewarding him for a breakout season in which he was selected as MLS' goalkeeper of the year.
Perkins will earn approximately $90,000 this season, about triple his $29,400 salary for 2006, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team did not release the contract details.
Perkins, who joined United as an undrafted rookie in 2004, became the full-time starter last year. He led the league in wins (15) and played in his first All-Star game.
"We are please to have concluded a new deal that is well-deserved for Troy," technical director Dave Kasper said. "He is a determined young goalkeeper who is far from reaching his true potential."
