BERLIN, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Werder Bremen won 2-0 at Bayer Leverkusen and Schalke 04 came from behind to beat Alemannia Aachen 2-1 as Germany's top two surged further clear of Bayern Munich on Wednesday.
Goals from Miroslav Klose and Hugo Almeida were enough to give Werder victory and keep them top of the Bundesliga with 42 points from 19 games.
Second-placed Schalke matched their pace, doing just enough to see off Aachen and stay behind Werder only on goal difference.
VfB Stuttgart are in a distant third place with 35 points after their 3-2 win over Arminia Bielefeld on Tuesday.
Bayern, champions for the past two seasons, are now eight points behind the leaders in fourth place, following a goalless draw with Bochum on Tuesday.
That result cost coach Felix Magath his job, with Bayern deciding on Wednesday that dropping out of the top three was cause enough to re-appoint Ottmar Hitzfeld in his place.
