No-showers Gil Vicente deducted six points

September 11, 2006

LISBON, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Gil Vicente have been deducted six points for failing to turn up for their second division match against Feirense, the Portuguese League said on Monday.

'Gil Vicente will face a six-point penalty for skipping the match on Sunday,' a league spokeswoman said. 'But the no-show will not have any influence on the recent relegation dispute.'

Their failure to fulfil the fixture was interpreted by local media as a protest against the Portuguese Soccer Federation's (FPF) decision to relegate the team from the Premier League last season for using an ineligible player, Mateus.

Gil Vicente were not immediately available to comment.

The club challenged the suspension of the Angolan in a civil court, contravening league and FIFA rules.

World soccer's governing body has threatened to suspend the FPF from all international tournaments if there is no resolution to the situation by Sept. 14.

Last Friday, the civil court, acting on the presentation by the FPF of a measure invoking the public interest, rejected Gil Vicente's appeal but the club can contest the decision.
