Emerton signs new deal at Blackburn

Blackburn manager Mark Hughes has expressed his delight after Brett Emerton snubbed the chance to leave Ewood Park.

The Australian wide midfielder has signed a new four-year contract with Rovers, putting an end to speculation linking him with Middlesbrough and other clubs.

Emerton alternated between the bench and Blackburn's starting line-up last season, but Hughes was determined to keep the 27-year-old, a £2.2million buy from Feyenoord in 2003 whose previous contract was due to expire next summer.

Hughes told Blackburn's club website, 'He's a player who gives me a lot of options.

'He is very versatile in that he can play wide, at full-back and he can make breaks from the centre of the park.

'He has the ability to carry the ball from one end of the field to the other, and that's why other teams have coveted him this summer.'
