Washington, D.C. -- D.C. United announced it has traded the rights to former players Dema Kovalenko and Shawn Kuykendall to Red Bull New York. In return, United receives a partial allocation from New York.
Both players were on United's roster last year, but have not played with the squad this season. Kovalenko left the team during the offseason and returned to his native Ukraine, where signed a one-year contract with FC Metalurh Zaporizhya. Kuykendall, a native of Vienna, VA, was waived in February of this year.
Kovalenko, who won the 1998 National Championship while at Indiana University, was acquired by United from the Chicago Fire following the 2002 season. Last season, he started 23 of the 26 games he saw time in, notching four goals and four assists. The six-year veteran has compiled 34 goals and 34 assists in his MLS career.
Kuykendall was drafted by United in the fourth round (48th overall) of the 2005 Supplemental Draft. The midfielder logged 10 minutes in just two League appearances last year and was instrumental in helping the United reserve team to the 2005 Championship, starting in each of the squad's 12 games and notching two assists.
