Portsmouth fail with £4.5m bid for Villa's Barry

Portsmouth have failed with a £4.5million offer for Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry.

Harry Redknapp was keen to bring the left-sided player to Fratton Park and could make another offer after David O'Leary was sacked as Villa boss.

Redknapp told The News: 'Gareth Barry is a talented player and we placed a bid with Aston Villa. They turned it down because he is someone they want to keep.

'I don't know if the situation will be different now David O'Leary has been sacked.'

Redknapp is also keen on Manchester City defender Sylvain Distin, who this week lost the captaincy at Eastlands to Richard Dunne.

Distin has been offered a new deal by City and Redknapp said: 'Manchester City are trying their best to keep him but he's the type of defender I like.'
