Old Firm pair named in Scotland squad for Japan

April 26, 2006

Scotland coach Walter Smith has named four new faces in his 20-man squad for the Kirin Cup tournament in Japan next month where they will face Bulgaria and the hosts.

Motherwell goalkeeper Graeme Smith, Celtic defender Stephen McManus and Rangers duo Chris Burke and Kris Boyd all get their chance to stake a claim for the forthcoming 2008 European Championship qualifiers which start early next season.

Reading skipper Graeme Murty, 31, whose one and only cap was in a friendly defeat against Wales two years ago, is recalled, as is Aberdeen's utility player Scott Severin.

However, several regular players have to miss out. Four players at Hearts - Craig Gordon, Andy Webster, Steven Pressley and Paul Hartley - as well as Christian Dailly of West Ham have Scottish and English cup final duties, while Scotland captain Barry Ferguson and influential midfielder Darren Fletcher are injured.
