LONDON -- Steaua Bucharest, Sevilla and Schalke advanced to the semifinals of the UEFA Cup with ties on Thursday and joined Middlesbrough, which beat Basel 4-1 to overcome a deficit from the first leg.
Eduardo's goal in the 23rd minute gave visiting Basel a 3-0 lead in the two-game, total-goals series. Mark Viduka scored in the 33rd and 57th minutes, and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink got a goal in the 79th.
Massimo Maccarone scored the deciding goal in the 90th minute after goalkeeper Pascal Zuberbuehler saved Fabio Rochemback's shot. Middlesbrough won the series 4-3.
Steaua, the 1986 European champion, held crosstown rival Rapid Bucharest to a 0-0 draw following a 1-1 tie in the first leg and advanced on away goals.
Sevilla rallied to tie 1-1 at Zenit St. Petersburg and advanced to the semifinals for the first time, winning the series 5-2. Schalke's 1-1 tie with visiting Levski Sofia gave it a 4-2 aggregate win.
In the semifinals, Sevilla plays Schalke, and Steaua meets Middlesbrough.
