Rapids re-sign top goaltender Cannon

DENVER -- The Colorado Rapids signed two-time MLS goalkeeper of the year Joe Cannon to a multiyear contract, the team said Wednesday.

Terms of the deal were not released, but Cannon's New York-based agent Ron Waxman said the deal makes Cannon the highest paid goalie in the league.

"And he will be for the next few years," Waxman said. "He deserves it, it was a long time coming."

Cannon posted eight shutouts with a goals-against-average of 1.20 last season, despite playing with an abdominal injury for much of the season.

"I'm very happy to have this deal inked and want to thank Major League Soccer, the Colorado Rapids and my agent, Ron Waxman for making it happen," Cannon said in a statement released by the Rapids. "I'm looking forward to continue building the foundation of the team and helping the Rapids get to the next level by giving this franchise their first MLS Championship."
