BELGRADE, Jan 27 (Reuters) - Serbia and Montenegro league leaders Red Star Belgrade signed a two-year contract with Japanese international striker Takayuki Suzuki for an undisclosed fee on Friday.
Suzuki joins the former European champions from J-league side Kashima Antlers after loan spells with Belgian first division clubs RC Genk and Heusden Zolder, as well as a brief stint in Brazilian football.
The striker, who has scored 11 goals in 55 appearances for his country, said he was delighted to join 'a great club with a famous name and history.'
'I am honoured to be the first Japanese player to join a club of Red Star's stature. I will do my absolute best to live up to expectations here,' he told reporters.
'I've wanted to play for Red Star for a long time and this has finally come true. I can't wait for my debut at this magnificent stadium.'
Red Star, who lead the first division by three points from champions Partizan Belgrade and have reached the cup semi-finals, have added four local players before acquiring Suzuki in a bid to win the domestic double.
Under-21 international midfielder Nenad Milijas arrived from neighbours Zemun, followed by Vozdovac Belgrade's duo Dusan Djokic and Dusan Andjelkovic and goalkeeper Goran Adamovic from third division BSK Borca.
