Torquay coach Leroy Rosenior has had his contract at Plainmoor terminated 'by mutual consent'.
Rosenior, 41, has left the Plainmoor hot seat in the wake of United's 3-1 home defeat by Rochdale last night which saw the Gulls slump back into the bottom two of League Two.
Bateson said: 'It's disappointing that it's had to end. Leroy and I got on really well and have had a good working relationship over the past three-and-a-half years.
'We had a meeting last night and further discussions this morning and decided a parting of the ways was in the best interests for both parties.
'We have played some great football while Leroy has been here it's so frustrating that we just can't get a win. Now we have to get out of the relegation zone.'
