ATHENS, Jan 24 (Reuters) - AEK Athens are to sign Brazilian midfielder Emerson from Greek first division rivals Xanthi, AEK said on their website.

'The player will sign an 18-month contract after passing a medical on Tuesday,' AEK said.

The 33-year-old Emerson joined fifth-placed Xanthi in the close-season and made 16 appearances for the side from northern Greece, scoring one goal.

The Brazilian spent two seasons at Middlesbrough and has also played for Glasgow Rangers, Deportivo Coruna and Atletico Madrid in recent years.

AEK are second in the league, three points behind leaders Olympiakos Piraeus and are pushing for their first championship since 1994.
