Empoli name Cagni as new coach

ROME, Jan 19 (Reuters) - Empoli have appointed Luigi Cagni to replace sacked coach Mario Somma, the struggling Serie A club announced on its website on Friday.

Cagni, 55, has previous Serie A experience with Piacenza and Verona but faces a baptism of fire at Empoli, whose first fixture is an away trip to leaders Juventus on Sunday.

'The club is expecting a lot from my experience, but I have not come here to play defensively,' he said.

'Our defence can improve, but with my style of play the team is always looking to score. We'll try and get something against Juventus -- we've got nothing to lose.'

Somma, who had never before coached a top-flight side, led Empoli to promotion last season when they finished second in Serie B.

They began this season strongly, but have taken just two points in their last seven matches to slip back to 15th, four points above the relegation zone.

Somma was the sixth coach to lose his job in Serie A this season.
