Bird flu prompts Bulgarian teams to scrap Turkey trip

SOFIA, Bulgaria -- Bird flu prompted at least three Bulgarian soccer teams to call off their regular winter training in Turkey.

League leader CSKA-Sofia, Litex Lovech and Naftex were to have held training camps in the Turkish resort of Antalya.

"We are definitely not going, mainly because of the bird flu," CSKA spokesman Vasil Koinarev said Wednesday, adding the team will choose instead among Cyprus, Portugal and Spain.

In Turkey, 21 people, mostly children, have tested positive for the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu. Turkish authorities, however, maintained it was safe to travel to their country.
