ROME, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Fiorentina goalkeeper Sebastian Frey is expected to be out for three months after damaging cruciate ligaments in his left knee, the Serie A club said on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old Frenchman suffered the injury in the closing stages of Tuesday's Italian Cup defeat against Juventus, when he collided with opposing striker Marcelo Zalayeta.
A decision will be made in the next few days on whether or not Frey's knee requires surgery.
His absence is a serious blow to Fiorentina, who are fourth in Serie A on 37 points, 12 behind leaders Juve and pushing hard for a place in next season's Champions League.
Fiorentina's reserve keeper Sebastian Cejas has already been promised to Serie A rivals Treviso, while the team's third stopper, Marco Roccati, has little top-flight experience.
Frey, who was brought to Italy by Inter Milan eight years ago, is in his first year with Fiorentina having transferred from Parma during the close season.
