Luton's eight-goal thriller against Liverpool proved a hit with television audiences after it was revealed the tie was watched by nearly eight-and-a-half million viewers.

The FA Cup third-round clash, which Luton lost 5-3 after leading by two goals, was shown on the BBC, who confirmed that the figures represent a 26% increase in the corresponding games from last season's competition.

Viewing numbers peaked at 8.4 million as the excitement reached fever peach in what was a classic cup tie - a number only bettered last year for the final when Arsenal beat Manchester United in a penalty shootout.
