BILBAO, Spain -- David Beckham scored in the 71st minute to lead Real Madrid over Athletic de Bilbao 1-0 on Tuesday night in the first leg of the fifth round of the Spanish King's Cup.
Sliding along the ground about 10 yards from the goal, Beckham connected on a low cross from Robinho and chipped the ball over goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubia and just under the crossbar.
The second leg is scheduled for Jan. 12 in Madrid.
In Tuesday's other game, Barcelona rallied to win 3-1 at Zamora, a third-division team. Joaquin "Xaco" Gomez Cela scored in the fifth minute, but Giovanni van Bronckhorst tied it in the 37th and Rafael Marquez scored the go-ahead goal in the 81st. The second leg is Jan. 11.
Fifth-round games Wednesday include Villarreal-Valencia, Celta de Vigo-Betis, Gatafe-Espanyol, Osasuna-Deportivo de La Coruna, Cadiz-Sevilla and Atletico de Madrid-Real Zaragoza.
