TENERIFE, Spain, Jan 20 (Reuters) - Former Cologne boss Ewald Lienen has been sacked as coach of Spanish second division side Tenerife, the Canary island club said on Monday.

'The board was unanimous in its agreement to sack the coach because of the team's recent run of poor results,' Tenerife president Victor Perez Ascanio told reporters.

Tenerife, who were relegated from the top flight last season, dropped to 15th position in the 22-team second division following a 2-0 defeat at Murcia on Sunday and are now just one point above the relegation zone.

The 49-year-old German, who was assistant coach to Jupp Heynckes at Tenerife between 1995 and 1997, returned to take charge at the club at the beginning of the season following spells at Hansa Rostock and Cologne.
