Ancelotti: Courtois is a great goalkeeper
Jose Mourinho has once more shut down questions about the future of goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois despite reports that both his temporary club Atletico Madrid and rivals Real Madrid are interested in purchasing the Belgium international.
The 21-year-old has been on loan with the Spanish club since 2011 and in January declared his desire for a quick decision over whether he will be returning to Stamford Bridge to battle for Petr Cech’s No.1 jersey, or else be allowed to leave the London club.
However, the Blues’ Portuguese coach has stated that the player still has two years left on his current deal, and no assurances will be given over the keeper’s long-term future.
“No -- we don’t struggle to keep [Courtois],” Mourinho said. “He has two more years of contract.
“I don’t need to give assurances to any player. A player that has a contract with Chelsea, has a contract with Chelsea.
“If anyone wants him we have to know. The problem is when you want a player and they belong to another club. It’s easy to say we have no problems.
“We have a structure that does that every weekend and passes all the information they can pass. Not just in England but abroad. Everything that happens with them are our interest.
“Even things with the medical department. We’re in control of the situation. I prefer to give them independence. They have to play for another club. At the end of the season we’ll make decisions.”
Courtois has been in superb form for La Liga title chasers Atletico this season, and starred as they beat AC Milan 1-0 at the San Siro on Wednesday in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.
Atleti goalscorer Diego Costa praised the young shot-stopper’s display, saying: "Courtois is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and he knows it. With a keeper like him, we feel more secure.”
Courtois' father recently declared he expects Chelsea to decide Cech's fate before deciding on his son's future, while Mourinho ruled out a swap deal last month involving the keeper and Madrid striker Costa.
