Manchester City defender Gael Clichy said he wishes he had played in Ligue 1 and could be tempted to return to his native France one day.

However, the France international -- who has also expressed an interest in playing in the MLS -- is adamant he would happily spend the rest of his playing days in the Premier League.

Clichy has spent the last decade in England after joining Arsenal from Cannes, then a third-tier team, and his only experience of top-flight football has come abroad.

He believes he missed out by leaving his homeland at the age of 17, and has noted the changes in French football as Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco have become two of Europe’s big spenders.

He told French website Foot Sur-7: "It is one of my regrets that I have not played in the French Ligue 1. I did play in the lower divisions but people didn’t really know me at the time and I have not sampled all the French stadiums.

"Who knows? Ligue 1 is now really attractive with PSG and Monaco and, if the opportunity arises, I would be happy to play in France because it is my country. But I feel good in England. I like the English and the football is so passionate.”

He added: “I believe that the Premier League is the most challenging in the world and if there was the chance that I could play here for the rest of my career, I would sign today because if you are playing in the Premier League, it means that you are facing the best players. I train hard every day to remain at this level and I have been fortunate to play for Arsenal and now for Manchester City.”
