Mendy, 18, is highly regarded in France having already been capped at Under-19 level for his country. Playing almost 30 games for Le Havre last season, his performances have drawn the attention of a clutch of clubs in England – with Arsenal, Sunderland and newly promoted Cardiff City reportedly monitoring him.

Lyon and Marseille have also registered an interest in Mendy, but the player revealed to French radio station RMC that his preference this summer remains a move to England.

“I have always dreamt of playing in England so I am happy to be linked with English clubs,” Mendy said. “I know it is a big step to go there straight away, but if you want to progress in Europe you need to play at the top level.”

That was followed by confirmation from the club’s president Jean-Pierre Louvel that Le Havre had begun negotiations over Mendy’s departure.

“We are talking to clubs and the talks with English teams are going better than others,” he told RMC. “He is most likely going to go and play in England.”
