Pogatetz, 30, nicknamed ‘Mad Dog’ during his time at Middlesbrough, left Wolfsburg on Sunday to undergo a medical at the Hammers, according to kicker.

West Ham are believed to have offered the Austria international a loan contract until the end of the season, with a further option to make the deal permanent.  Austrian paper Kleine Zeitung are reporting that the English club are to pay €500,000 for the loan deal.

Pogatetz, who joined Wolfsburg from Hannover last summer, has not made an appearance for the club since October, despite starting the first eight league matches of the season.

Meanwhile, Wolfsburg could be set to offload further players as Srdjan Lakic’s transfer to Eintracht Frankfurt is becoming more likely.

Lakic, 29, is to undergo a medical at the club on Monday and will sign an 18-month loan contract.

Rasmus Jonsson is also set for an exit, joining MSV Duisburg on loan. The one-time Sweden international joined Wolfsburg from Helsingborg in 2011 but in 17 games has only scored one goal.
