Lloyd Sam has been handed a new contract by New York Red Bulls, the MLS franchise has announced.

The 28-year-old winger - a former England Under-20 international - originally joined the club on a short-term deal after leaving hometown club Leeds United last August, but only made five appearances before suffering a knee injury in October which ruled him out of the remainder of the season.

However, the former Charlton Athletic trainee is recovering well and Red Bulls expect him to be ready for the new MLS season, which begins in March.

"Lloyd showed our team and fans at the end of last season that he has the potential to be a very good player for us,” sporting director Andy Roxburgh told the club's official website. “We are happy to sign Lloyd, who is recovering well from his knee injury he sustained last year. He will be fit for preseason."

Red Bulls did not specify the length or terms of the new deal.
