Francesco Guidolin says the Coppa Italia needs an overhaul and to be given the same prestige as the FA Cup to increase its waning popularity.

The Udinese coach, whose side enter the competition against Fiorentina on Wednesday was speaking as the Inter-Hellas Verona tie on Tuesday drew just over 11,000 to San Siro, which can hold eight times that amount of spectators. That turnout was the latest in a long line of disappointing attendance figures for ties in the competition.

He said: "We need to give some history and tradition to the Italian Cup, one based on the English and French models. It's generally snubbed by fans and clubs, at least until we get to the semi-final and final stages,"

"We need to add value to it through mechanisms that it is not up to me to decide upon, but I don't believe it would be a bad idea to make Serie A an 18-team tournament again and having a Cup round in August."
