Philippe Mexes says his incredible goal on Wednesday night "was a bit lucky" but Adriano Galliani claimed Lionel Messi would "have been made a saint" had the Barcelona star scored it.

Milan may have secured qualification to the last 16 of the Champions League last night thanks to a 3-1 win over Anderlecht but after the match all the talk was of the French defender's strike, a stunning overhead kick from outside the area.

Manager Massimiliano Allegri was the first to comment, telling reporters how unbelievable the goal was from his position on the bench.

"I saw this extraordinary goal and the ball looping into the air," he said "at the time I didn't believe he'd scored, as it seemed impossible that it would go in!"

Milan vice-president Galliani was even more enthusiastic with his praise however, comparing it to the fourth goal Zlatan Ibrahimovic netted for Sweden in their recent friendly win over England and hoping Mexes' would receive equal coverage.

He told Sports Mediaset: "Ibrahimovic scored that goal in a friendly, but this one was official and we hope it'll go round the world just like Ibra's did. If Leo Messi had scored that, every news channel around the world would show it and he'd have been made a saint tonight!"

The player himself was far less forthcoming, but did admit that his team-mates asked him if it was intentional.

"Nothing went through my mind," Mexes said. "I gave it a go, it went well but I will admit it was a bit lucky. Ibra is a phenomenon but for a defender to score a goal like that is unusual and I'd never got one like that before. My team-mates asked if I was trying to provide a cross and got it wrong!"

"I dedicate it to my family who have always supported me and my children, as it isn't easy for them to stay home with their Dad always travelling around."
