Daniel Montenegro notched the game's only goal in the 26th minute to lift America within three points of leaders Tijuana after 15 games.

Tijuana, Toluca and Leon are also guaranteed a place in the post-season after the weekend results. Tijuana drew 1-1 with Morelia, Toluca lost 3-0 to Cruz Azul, while Leon defeated Jaguares 4-1.

There was late drama in Puebla, where Jose Fonseca grabbed a last-minute winner as Atlante edged the third-bottom hosts 2-1 to climb to mid-table. Herminio Ovelar had looked to have earned Puebla a point in the 65th minute when he cancelled out Esteban Paredes' third-minute opener, but Fonseca had other ideas.

Finally, first-half strikes from Rafael Marquez Lugo and Marco Fabian handed Guadalajara a 2-0 success against Atlas, the visitors' woes compounded by the dismissal of defender Hugo Rodrigues 18 minutes from time.
