Gomez, 27, has endured a frustrating period having been forced to sit on the sidelines since pre-season after picking up an ankle injury that required surgery.

However, Heynckes has revealed the Germany international's misery is set to come to an end as he is to return to first-team training on Saturday.

"He has trained very well," Heynckes told AZ. "He came through pain free and I think that he could finish the first part of the final training session with the team on Saturday, but no one can forecast when he will be back in the squad."

Meanwhile, Arjen Robben, has been ruled out of Sunday's Bundesliga clash with Bayer Leverkusen, following his recent thigh injury.

"For Sunday, there's no way, because he has not trained with the ball and the team," Heynckes said. "I hope that he'll be back training with the ball soon.

"He will possibly be available for the DFB-Pokal game against Kaiserslautern next Wednesday."
