A statement on the club's official website said: "The Board of the Club would like to put on record their thanks to Dougie for all his efforts over the past couple of years and their disappointment over the events of the past few days. The search for a replacement starts immediately."

Freedman's assistant Lennie Lawrence and coach Curtis Fleming will replace him in the dug-out for their game against Barnsley on Tuesday evening.

Palace gave Freedman permission to talk to Bolton on Monday and reports suggest he is set to be be at their game against Wolves on Tuesday evening before being officially installed in time for the game at Middlesbrough on Saturday.

The Scot, who led Palace to a 17th placed finish last season, has attracted the attention of Bolton after taking the Eagles up to fourth with an unbeaten run of eight games which includes six wins.
