Ajax coach Frank de Boer will be demanding answers from one of his players ahead of Saturday's return to Eredivisie action against SC Heracles Almelo.
Ajax midfielder Miralem Sulejmani, who has been ruled out for several weeks with an ankle injury, came off the bench during Serbia's 1-0 World Cup qualification defeat by Macedonia on Tuesday – and that came as a shock to De Boer.
"Did he really play?" De Boer asked De Telegraaf. "This is really a very big surprise. As a club, we should give players to national teams and we can only indicate what is sensible and not.
"We will consult with the medical staff. Miralem is a very expensive player for Ajax. I believe that a comeback must happen in consultation [with national sides], and I do not think this has been the case. On the other hand, I am of course glad Miralem apparently can play again.''
Elsewhere, PSV Eindhoven captain Mark van Bommel is still a doubt for his side's meeting with Willem II Tilburg at the Phillips Stadion.
PSV coach Dick Advocaat confirmed that the 35-year-old midfielder looks set to miss out after he picked up a knee injury in the last match against NAC Breda.
"Van Bommel still has problems with his knee," Advocaat told Voetbal International. "He has trained separately on Monday. The pain is not over yet. It is thus yet to be seen if he can play on Saturday."
Ola Toivonen will definitely miss out for PSV with a hamstring injury.
Leaders FC Twente travel to Parkstad Limburg Stadion to take on Roda JC, but it is expected to be a game too soon for the return of striker Dmitry Bulykin.
The 32-year-old is close to making a comeback after recovering from knee surgery at the start of September and told his club's official website: "In two or three days, I can get back to giving the maximum on the field.''
Twente are three points ahead of PSV in second place, with Vitesse Arnhem on the same number of points in third.
They play NAC Breda on Saturday while the other games see AZ Alkmaar host NEC Nijmegen, bottom side VVV-Venlo take on Feyenoord, ADO Den Haag play FC Utrecht, FC Groningen travel to Heerenveen and RKC Waalwijk play PEC Zwolle.
