Del Piero suffers defeat against Heskey
Alessandro Del Piero was on target for Sydney FC in the Australian A-League but his strike was not enough to avoid defeat against Emile Heskey's Newcastle Jets.
In front of a record regular-season crowd of 35,419 at the Sydney Football Stadium, Newcastle Jets emerged as 3-2 victors over the hosts.
Del Piero's strike came on 27 minutes via a superb free-kick, but Heskey's side were not to be beaten as the former Aston Villa striker volleyed in a goal of his own.
Italian forward Del Piero, 37, joined Sydney FC in the summer after his contracted expired at Serie A giant Juventus.
Elsewhere, Brisbane Roar hammered Melbourne Victory 5-0 as Thomas Broich, Erik Paartalu, Besart Berisha (64 & 90) and Mitch Nichols all scored.
Later on Saturday, Melbourne Heart take on Wellington Phoenix FC with the pair having both won their opening matches of the new season.
