Dempsey, 29, was linked with a move to Liverpool throughout the summer - but the US international forward ended up moving to Tottenham in a deal that went through late on deadline day and told Sports Illustrated it was "a tough time".

Earlier in the summer, Fulham complained to the Premier League over remarks made about Dempsey by the Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers. They felt Rodgers contravened Premier League rules by publicly revealing his club's interest in the player.

Then, on a hectic deadline day, Liverpool were reported to have had a bid rejected while one from Aston Villa was accepted before Dempsey finally went to White Hart Lane in a last-ditch move for a fee of around £6 million.

Fulham also claimed Dempsey was refusing to play for them after leaving him out of the squad for the 5-0 thumping of Norwich on the opening day - a claim the player denied.

"I just remember calling my wife and my mum and almost wanting to break down in tears because it was a tough time," he told Sports Illustrated.

"Going into that last day and night, there were still a lot of question marks. It wasn't clear-cut this was going to happen. It was difficult for Fulham and for me, not knowing how it was going to end.

"It's just about having that faith, holding on to hope that something was going to happen that both parties were going to be happy with.

"In the end that was accomplished, but the deal didn't get done until right about 9pm, and that was when a fee was agreed.

"But then you had to look at all the logistics, trying to make sure all the paperwork was through, doing the medical, signing the contract and having everything sent back before the deadline at 11."

Speaking about the allegation that he had refused to play for the Cottagers in order to push a move through, he said: "I did not refuse to play. There were some things that were said that were not true."

Dempsey scored 23 goals for Fulham last season and said he was looking forward to trying to reproduce that sort of impact at White Hart Lane but admitted: "It is a gamble you take when you make a move to a new team.

"You don't know where you're going to fit in exactly, you don't know how you're going to gel. I have to show Andre Villas-Boas where I am at, and he will see what the best fit will be."
