Barcelona have announced that Javier Mascherano has agreed a contract extension until 2016.

Mascherano, 28, is due to sign the contract in the coming weeks when all parties are available to meet in Barcelona, the club said.

The new contract will include a €100 million buyout clause and the player tweeted: "As FC Barcelona has made it known I have come to an agreement on the extension of my contract with the club. Very happy to be living this!!!"

Mascherano signed for Barca from Liverpool in 2010 and has become a key player for the club, winning La Liga, the Champions League, Copa del Rey, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
