Vlaar, 27, was in Birmingham to meet Villa Park boss Paul Lambert over the weekend, and says he was left with a positive impression of both manager and club.

The central defender, a Netherlands international, told De Telegraaf: "I was in Birmingham on Sunday to have talks with Paul Lambert and left with a very positive impression.

"Joining Aston Villa would be a dream come true. I look forward to the Premier League, but I will miss Feyenoord.

"I feel at home at De Kuip and, although both me personally and the club have had a lot of ups and downs, we have maintained a good relationship."

He said he would miss "the stadium, the fans, my team-mates and staff" if the deal goes through.

Vlaar, who has won nine caps, would join Matt Lowton as a new recruit to the Villa defence if the transfer is successfully completed.
