Sir Trevor Brooking has rubbished claims that he was the reason behind the FA's decision not to appoint Harry Redknapp as England manager.

Redknapp was the overwhelming favourite to replace Fabio Capello, but Roy Hodgson was appointed on Tuesday.

FA chairman David Bernstein offered no explanation as to why Redknapp was overlooked for the role, prompting suggestions that a longstanding feud between Brooking and the Tottenham manager had been the reason behind Redknapp's snub.

Reports circulated that Brooking believed Redknapp had betrayed former West Ham boss Billy Bonds when he was promoted to Hammers manager back in 1994, but the FA's Director of Football Development has denied such claims.

"To be honest, we discussed a lot of candidates, none of whom I had a personal problem with," Brooking said. "It's a non-starter. That didn't come into the decision-making at all."
