United were 3-0 up and out of sight by half-time as Pontius struck after eight and 32 minutes before Nick DeLeon got in on the act with 36 minutes played.
Pontius then completed his treble on 69 minute before star Red Bulls striker Thierry Henry grabbed a consolation goal moments later.
Defeat for the Red Bulls, who were without suspended former Barcelona defender Rafa Marquez, ended a five-game unbeaten run.
