Argentina review

Estudiantes suffer defeat

April 8, 2012

Estudiantes lost ground in the race for Argentina's Torneo Clausura after suffering a 2-1 reverse at Belgrano Cordoba.

Mauro Boselli opened the scoring for Estudiantes after 13 minutes, but the hosts drew level through Esteban Gonzalez in the 51st minute.

Trouble flared in the 63rd minute when both sides saw a player dismissed - Nestor Silvera for the hosts and Leandro Desabato for Estudiantes - and there was more drama to come as Gonzalez's second goal after 82 minutes secured the points for Cordoba.

Victory would have taken Estudiantes into third place, two points behind leaders Boca Juniors, but instead they remain in fifth place, just a point ahead of Cordoba who climb to seventh.

In the day's other game, Godoy Cruz and Newell's Old Boys played out a 1-1 draw.

Godoy took the lead through Juan Garro after 47 minutes, but hit trouble six minutes later when the dismissal of Nicolas Olmedo left them defending their lead a man light.

The hosts looked as though they had done enough to hold on for the win, but Newell's grabbed an equaliser in injury time as Maximiliano Urruti fired home.

The point leaves Newell's in third place, while Godoy climb to 14th.
