April 8, 2012

Slawomir Peszko has been suspended from the Cologne squad until further notice after he spent the night in police custody.

Peszko, 27, was arrested over an alleged dispute with a taxi driver in the early hours of Sunday morning, according to an announcement on the club's website.

He was under the influence of alcohol at the time and, as a result, he has been dropped from the Cologne first team until a full investigation has been carried out.

Peszko informed his club coach Stale Solbakken and chairman Claus Horstmann of the incident after being released from custody.

In addition to the suspension, Cologne are likely to fine the player for misconduct having broken club rules by drinking into the early hours of the morning after Saturday's 1-1 draw with Werder Bremen.

As a result of the club's precarious league position, and with a match against Mainz on Tuesday, Solbakken had ordered the team in for training on Sunday morning after having taken them away for a training camp for two days last week.

It is already the second time that a Cologne player has fallen foul of the law this year with Miso Brecko stopped for drink driving on the night of carnival in the city. He was also given a hefty fine, but he remained in the squad for their subsequent match against Nurnberg.

Solbakken warned at the time that he would reduce the players' freedoms if they did not know how to use them respectfully.

Cologne's 1-1 draw with Bremen has left them in the bottom three of the Bundesliga with just five games of the season remaining.
