Bergsson, 46, became a lawyer after retiring from professional football in 2003 and it was at the Reykjavík offices of law firm Legal Support, where he works, that the knife attack took place.

The ex-Iceland international came to the aid of a colleague, who was left in a critical condition after being attacked, before he was stabbed twice in the thigh himself.

Reports in the Icelandic media claimed the assailant was a man in his 30s.

Bergsson first arrived in England in 1988 when he joined Tottenham, before later moving on to Bolton, where he enjoyed an eight-year spell before hanging up his boots.
