February 1, 2012

Gold Coast captain Michael Thwaite struck his first A-League goal in stoppage time to earn his side a 1-1 draw against Melbourne Victory at Aurora Stadium in Launceston.

Thwaite's 93rd-minute goal cancelled out Harry Kewell's opener just after the hour mark as the teams shared the spoils in the first A-League game played for points in Tasmania.

Kewell broke the deadlock with a powerful free-kick which took a slight deflection on its way past Gold Coast goalkeeper Chris O'Connor.

That appeared to have set the visitors on their way to a fifth win of the season, but Thwaite popped up with seconds remaining to deny Jim Magilton his first triumph as Victory manager.
