Everton are hopeful of securing the services of Rangers striker Nikica Jelavic before the close of the January transfer window.

Jelavic's future at Ibrox has been the subject of conjecture, with Championship side West Ham having seen a bid turned down by SPL champions Rangers.

Liverpool and QPR are also reported to be admirers of the Croatia international, who has scored 30 goals in 45 league appearances since joining the Gers from Rapid Vienna in 2010, but Everton appear at the front of the queue to land Jelavic, with the Premier League side's funds boosted by the recent sale of Diniyar Bilyaletdinov to Spartak Moscow.

Asked about the situation on Monday, David Moyes said: "I never talk about players at other clubs - I wouldn't do that. I don't like it and I didn't like it when I was a player and I kept hearing there were other centre-halves coming in to take my position. I wouldn't talk about players at other clubs.

"If there was any news I would give it to you. You will need to wait until midnight tomorrow night and then we will let you know what is happening."

The Press Association reports that Everton have suggested a figure but that it falls far short of Rangers' £8 million valuation.

The Toffees, who have found goals hard to come by this season, are currently 14th in the Premier League, eight points above the relegation zone.
